Jim found himself alone in Hong Kong for the weekend and wanted a playmate. As I am only just “up the road” and had no work I decided that the opportunity for a weekend in Hong Kong with my old mate was too good to refuse.
If I had known how hot Kong Kong was at this time of year I would not have brought the same clothes as I have been wearing in Nanjing. On Lamma Island, I had to relent and buy a T shirt. Even Jim was down to his undies at one stage!
The first evening we decided to hit the town, have a meal and then head to a bar and ordered a bottle of wine. The wine was good although the company was somewhat lacking. After half an hour, Jim’s blinks started getting longer and eventually his eyes closed completely and he fell asleep sitting on the bar stool. The bar manager said “I can see you have been married for a long time”.
I woke him up and we headed back to the hotel “Tomorrow we’ll have a big night” he said.
After Lamma Island (which was beautiful) we set out for the town again, after a nice Italian we wondered where to head next. Avoiding numerous bars banging out loud music and feeling rather worn out from the sun drenched walk around Lamma Island Jim suggested goig to the bar in the hotel. However, after a quick look at the price list, we headed to the local 7-11, got a couple of cans of lager and went back to the room to watch tv, read our books and share one can.
Predictably, Jim fell asleep on his bed still clutching his half full glass!
Next day – refreshed – we got a bus to Stanley. Jim did a 17 mile run while I sat in the shade, read my book and wandered around the new Stanley shopping mall. After a spell of sunbathing (in the shade) on the nearby beach, Jim followed up his run with a half hour swim (inside the shark nets) and then a little light shopping in Stanley market.
The next “big night out” was due although after another Italian we both agreed that we might as well go straight to the 7-11 this time and repeat the “can of lager and a book in the hotel room” stunt of the night before.
So those were our big nights out in Hong Kong. Maybe we’re getting old?
