Beach Football

I like to get on my bike and cycle across the peninsular to the other side where there is always a cool sea breeze making it a lot nicer temperature than on the yacht club side. Now I have my bike it’s easy to get there and on a Sunday the roads are quiet and I can cycle down to Salt cafe for some lunch.

This week as I cycled along Toure Drive I came across a small football tournament on the beach. Barefoot footballers were hurling themselves at the ball, kicking up sand and rolling on the ground.

The breeze coming off the sea is quite strong there and the players were struggling to control the ball as it caught in the wind. Nevertheless, even without the ability to dribble the ball they still did a pretty good job at playing the game.

After being in China for so long it’s really nice to live in a country where football is the national game. It all seems so familiar, boys using shirts for goalposts like we used to do and playing with a semi-inflated.

We never had to play on sand though and I am full of admiration for anyone who can.
