As I entered reception there were a handful of men on stepladders putting up balloons, bunting, Father Christmases, tinsel, snowflakes and generally making it look festive. Around a central area were a couple of hundred comfy chairs. “We’re getting ready for our Christmas party later today” she said.
Imagine a factory printing 12,000,000 bibles every year. On the outskirts of Nanjing there is the biggest bible printing factory known to man. It belongs to the Amity Foundation, a non-profit making joint venture between the Amity Foundation and the United Bible Societies. I managed to get a trip round the factory thanks to Rev. Li who works at the YMCA on Jhu Jiang Lu. She organised me to be met at reception by Alice from Administration and she gave me all the stats. Est. 1988 selling bibles to over 70 countries, thin paper printing experts in the world, 80 million bibles printed by November 2010 (last month).
There was even a bible printed in honour of the visit to the factory of Rev Billy Graham, the popular bible-thumping preacher from the USA. We then went onto the shop floor and saw printing and binding machines. Most were automated but some were still manually operated. It wasn’t quite as much fun as fabric printing because there wasn’t the noise, steam, smells but it was good. Pallets of bibles lined every walk way, some completed and awaiting despatch and some waiting by the binding machines. Some of the bibles were in languages I couldn’t work out.
As well as bibles there were diaries and children’s books piled high on pallets. Alice explained that you didn’t need to be a Christian to work there but it helped! Certainly a lot of people had been converted since taking up employment. I was particularly interested in the Braille bible produced in 26 volumes on thick brown paper by a small machine. The Braille department is run by a blind man who has, since reading the bible as part of his job, found Christianity. It seems it’s catching at Amity Printing! An hour later I spotted my driver loyally waiting for me in the car park. “God bless you” Alice said “And to you”.

and God Bless You.
