You have to be careful where you chain your bike up in Nanjing. Look around you – can you see any workmen resurfacing the road? If not, you are probably safe but if there’s even a slight sniff of tarmac, make a run (or pedla) for it. The owner of this beautiful red bike did not heed this advice and locked it to a metal box.
The city workmen clearly hadn’t thought it worthwhile to lift it up and resurface the pavement underneath – it was easier to make it part of the pavement.
Or maybe it’s part of a modern art instalation – or a bicycle eating pavement. But I doubt it – just laziness.
Welcome to Nanjing!
