In any country, it is immoral to waste food, but China still has millions of people struggling to feed themselves every day. I hate it, therefore, when I see people ordering far more than they could possibly manage to eat and then picking at it and leaving it uneaten. This couple sat next to me this week and not only ordered a burger ad chips each (I can’t even get through one portion), but a salad and nachos with cheese and chili.
I go to this restaurant very often and if I am there with a friend and order those nachos, we can barely get through them and certainly don’t need any more. But the Chinese see over-ordering as a sign of wealth….. Look how much food is on my table.
And according to the restaurant proprietor, unlike foreigners, the like to leave the half-eaten dishes on the table when they’ve finished picking at them. When the diners appear to have finished eating, the restaurant staff go to clear the tables but are told to leave it all there so that everyone can see how much food they have.
These people definitely have/had relatives who suffered in the famine which struck China during the Great Leap Forward.I’ve met some of these old people and leave absolutely nothing on their plate, nothing is wasted. The youth of China should look to them and put an end to this immoral and senseless waste of food.
