D is for Drip Drip Drip

I’ve been in this house for five years and for the whole of that time, there has been a problem with the guttering at the top of the house across the lane. For five years water has fallen from the top of the house (fourth floor) to the ground in a constant stream of drips, sometimes pouring in a waterfall.

At the top of the house you can see that someone has made some small effort at repair by wrappig some fabric around a water pipe but that was a long time ago and it has been dripping for so many years that the foundations of the house are sodden the wood rotting and mould turning the place green.

If I lived in that house I would make sure it was fixed, especailly given the price of houses here – why would anyone want the price of their house to deteriorate because they cannot be bothered to fix the drain pipe. Sometimes I lie awake in bed listen to it dripping all through the night. It lulls me to sleep a bit.

It beggars belief that nobody has seen fit to fix it in all the time I have been here. I have relaised that it’s not an isolated example of letting the condition of houses deteriorate. I found a most beautiful old house in Jing’an area which had been left to go rotten by the residents/owners.

Why oh why doesn’t anyone take responsibility for these buildings. I just can’t work it out. It’s more than laziness or apathy.
