Dubai, Burj Kalifa

We decided to go over to Dubai for the day to see the Spice Souk, the tallest building in the world and the old city. It’s only a couple of hours from Abu Dhabi and the roads are huge. It always amazes me that human beings can built such magnificent structures as these skyscrapers. We are like termites, building structures far bigger than ourselves. When you look up to see this huge needle-like building it’s hard to imagine the thinking that brought it about. I mean… who in their right mind would try to build the highest building on earth on top of sand!

All this sand has been brought from the deserts in numerous trucks, dumped into the sea and compacted into man-made islands. The Burj Kalifa actually floats on platform beneath the surface and moves up to 10 metres in a wind. Why would anyone want to live on the 136th floor of this building which moves in the wind and is built on sand?

How tall can a building be? Where is the limit of man’s ability to construct such structures? Surely there has to be a point which we cannot cross? Personally I think it’s about floor 20. Higher than that I really wouldn’t want to live.
