E is for Extermination

Crows – Oh my God there are loads of them in Dar es Salaam. Everyone complains about them. They terrorise diners in outdoors restaurants, kids eating ice-cream on the sea front have to beware the creatures. They swoop down even when there are people sitting at a table, and go for the leftover food on plates.

There is a simple solution to the problem of crows – a crow trap. However not many people have them. My neighbours have built a crow trap and it’s my favourite thing. There are always at least two crows in the trap to act as a lure to others.

They get fed bones and meat scraps from the kitchen and have plenty of water too. This is some great hotel for a crow, there is no shortage of food and water but there’s only one catch. When there are a handful of crows in the trap, all but two are taken out and killed.

This is generally done at night because crows are notoriously clever and if they see their pals getting exterminated then they will be less willing to enter the trap. The crows enter through some gaps in the top. The structure is surrounded with chicken wire and it’s pretty much impossible for them to escape once they are in there. Unless they can fly vertically through a small opening, they are doomed to death.

I know crows are animals and we should love all animals but I don’t love crows, they are a massive pest here and I would like to see crow traps in every garden. It’s the only way to control the numbers and make it a better place to live.
