When I look down at the floor of the Metro train I see almost everyone wearing training shoes, from the child just learning to walk to little old ladies, their backs bent double from a lifetime of hard work and mul-nutrition. Even businessmen wear trainers with their suits.
It’s all the usual brands, Nike, Adidas, Asics, Puma… unless you see a foreigner and then it’s FeiYue, the iconic Chinese plimsol. What a fantastic shoe this is. When you’re out at a foreign bar, just ook down and see how many people are in FeiYue. Not only are they cool but they are crazy cheap.
I buy mine on Anfu – there’s a kiosk shop – can only fit one person in at any time. There are shoes piled from floor to very low ceiling. It is not unusual to see a few people waiting outside for their turn to go in. I walked there in my old pumps, which had a hole worn in the bottom through constant heavy use.
I treated my myself to a new pair and two pairs of socks and the financial damage was less than £5 in total. If they charged 4 times that amount, I would still buy them. They are really comfy and cool and in any case, you can’t be a foreigner in Shanghai wthout a pair.
So if you want a pair of funky trainers/daps/plimsols/pumps head to the kiosk on Anfu Lu and pick up a pair for less than a Capuccino in Baker and Spice across the road.
