Keith told me I should try a capsule hotel while I was in Japan so for my last night in Fukuoka I booked a cabin in First Cabin Hakata. It took a while to find as it is on the 8th floor of a shopping centre.
It’s a strange place and reminded me a little of the storage facility I used to keep my furniture in. I think it’s supposed to resemble an aircraft and the signage certainly helps give this feel. The first class cabin has enough room to sit and put your bag but my business class cabin only has enough room for my body not even for my bag unless I put it on my bed while I sleep.
The hotel/hostel is divided into two distinct sections, male and female and each section has communal showers and toilet areas.
It’s a great idea in Japan where people are quite considerate to others and keep the noise down but in other countries (esp China) I just can’t see it working unless you confiscated their phones and ban the eating of pot noodles. I can’t imagine any Chinese person accepting these conditions.
