An office with a view

I go to the British Council in the French Concession each week. The area of the city is really beautiful, lots of tree lined streets, nice restaurants and loads of foreigners. From the 37th floor all you can see is tower bocks as far as the eye can see. There are supposed to be 23 million people in Shanghai and it’s easy to believe when you see the city from up here.

As you can imagine it’s quite hard to concentrate on marking scripts when you have this view whenever you lift your head up from the table.

The air quality has been bad recently. The newspapers often report the pollution levels and say that Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Nanjing are the worse. But if you were concerned about your health you just wouldn’t enter China.

Everything is dangerous here. There are hundreds of people a year who are injured and killed on the roads in Shanghai and indeed crossing the road is one of the most risky things here but you cannot live without crossing the road so you have no choice.

If you want a risk free life, healthy lungs and a body free of MSG, food additives and dodgy meat don’t come to China!
