It’s been happening slowly, you don’t notice it at first and then someone mentions it and you realise that, yes, the kisosk which used to add life to the streets, are being closed.
The one near Xiang Yang park was my favourite. It was always busy with people buying drinks and ice-crean and in the winter you could buy piping hot sweet potatoes. The smell of these potatoes wafted down the street so that by the time you had reached the kiosk you couldn’t resist buyig one. It also did hot corn which was very popular with the park visitors.
Now it has not just closed but been bricked up. What is it with the city authorities. Firstly they clear away all the street food carts which used to congregate on Fuxing Lu at night offering cheap and delicious fried noodles and no they are closing all the kiosks which served us with convenient bottles of cold water, magazines, snacks and hot food.
This city is going to lose the things which make it charming. Soon it will be devoid of any street life or character.
