I didn’t need kitchen supplies but it was nice sunny spring day and I wanted to stretch my legs so I went up to the part of the city where you can pick up anything from a coffee machine to a rattan basket, delicate porcelain tea services to earthenware jugs.
The firrst thing I noticed on the third floor of the warehouse style shop was not just that there were massive amount of pots and pans but there were no prices at all. On every shelf there is one sample of every item in stock and if you want to know the price you have to take out your phone and scan the QR code. Very quickly, on your mobile phone screen you see a photo and description of the item with the price and the option to add it to your basket.
This is the first time I have seen this style of shop, where everything is QR coded and a mobile phone is essential in order to purchase anything. I like the idea – but then I am a nerd so no surprise there.
I have never seen such massive pans and I wondered what on earth they were for. You could fit a body in them – my mind is cast back to that early episode of Breaking Bad – would have been a great size for disolving a body.
In the same ares as the warehouse are many small shops selling all manner of crockery and cutlery. I didn;t want to buy anything but I found myself leaving with a fruit bowl and a mixing bowl for the grand sum of 75RMB. What a great place near Changning Lu metro station, yet another fantastic mrket to tempt you to buy things you don’t need!
