Lake Victoria

I had the day free and wanted to do some exploring of the area around the outskirts of Kampala. Lake Victoria is a big drwa and I couldn’t go to Kampala and not visit the lake.

I was told that it was too far to go on a Boda Boda and that a taxi would be safer. There are a numbere of resorts around the lake and this one was recommended. However when I turned up at 11am I was the only customer. Apparnetly nothing happens until after lunch. So I spent a happy couple of hours chatting to the employees of the resort as they sat in the shade on the shores of the lake waiting for customers to come.

At last, a muslim family came, a father and his three daughters and one son. He was trying to persaude them to take a boat trip but two of them were too frrightened so I asked whether I could go instead.

It turns out the man works in Saudi Arabia as a diplomat for the Uganan government. The boat we had to take was broken and so the almost walking pace speed at which we left the harbour soon transpired to be maximum speed the vessel was capable of moving.

I was very disappointed and felt cheated – but although the boat hardly made a ripple in the water, the Ugandans on board were quite happy with their experience – 10 minutes out into the lake and 10 minutes back again.

But hey, the Ugandan men I chatted with were delightful, warm smiley and welcoming so although the boat trip was the worst I have ever taken, the whole experience was very positive.
