Lantern Festival

There always seems to be some sort of festival going on. We’ve had had to endure the fireworls and firecrackers of Spring Festival and now it’s the turn of the lantern festival. I was returning home this evening from seeing my friend Chris for half price burgers at Gourmet Kitchen in Shanghai Centre and I saw this chap setting off fireworks from the middle of the road (It is a quiet road!).

In China it is usual to buy a box of fireworks which you set light to and the box lets off the fireworks for you. You just light it and run. So there I am watching the firworks go up into the night sky when a car drove past and knocked the box over. Then the fireworks came sideways across the making me dive for cover and even surprising the security man who had placed them there in the first place.

He then decided to light some firecrackers. I could see him unwinding them so I asked him to wait while I ran across the road with my camera. I thought I could at least get a picture of him being blown up. He lit them and ran. They were niosey. Then they stopped. He went towards them again and relit them – he managed to get away just in time before they took his eyes out.

What we wouldn’t do for a bit of peace and quiet around here. The city is noisey enough without adding to it with lantern festival fireworks and doubtless scattered dead bodies across Shanghai.
