In today’s world of immediate communication, friends are never more than a couple of clicks away. Even my old friend, Woche, who lives a mud hut in Marsabit, a small town in the great Rift Valley of Kenya is reachable by text message and email.
It’s so easy to keep in touch but we seem to have become lazier as a result.
I have recently made a list of people with whom I am in danger of losing touch – Dick an old friend from Changzhou and Christopher and Tang Min in Nanjing are on my list. I wonder why, when we are more connected than ever before does it seem we find it harder to connect and keep in touch in a meaningful way. I am not talking about a chirpy text message every month or so, but something a bit deeper, something which requires at least a face to face meeting, a drink or sharing fof a meal.
So I am making a mid-year resolution to see my old friends more often and ‘break bread’ with them otherwise what will I be left with, an address book full of memories and that’s all.
