There is a chap who I have written about this man before. He is a legend in the FFC. There is always a queue coming from the little window from which he sells his potato cakes for 5p each. I have only ever had 3 or 4 because I am rarely prepared to queue for the time it takes to get to the front and make the purchase. The queue must be the slowest moving queue in Shanghai. Sometimes at 6:20 in the morning there are very few people at the window as I pass, but even at that time, I cannot just buy one. I still have to wait and as I’m usually rushing to the metro, it’s just not possible to wait around for the edges to crisp up.
Last night I was on my way to get some bread when, as usual, I had to walk past his window. As usual there was a light coming from it but no queue. this was highly unusual so I popped my head around the corner and saw that he was giving a TV interview. I am not surprised. This man is known at least throughout the area for his snacks.
Then I was told that the even more famous King of Cornwall, Rick Stein, had recently been to visit him on his tour of street food in the city. I can’t see any evidence of this online but if anyone had come to Shanghai to taste and film people making street food, this little window with its constant queue of hungry customers would be the first place they would head to.
It’s great to see him get recognition for the extremely cheap service he provides to the empty bellies of the people of Shanghai.
