Rabindranath Tagore and the Indian Association of Shanghai

indiansI walk past the statue of Rabindranath Tagore at least once every day and I did stop once to have a look at the dedication to him. Today however, on that corner a large crowd was gathered with phone held high in the air pointing at what? As I got closer I could see a group of mostly Indian women, in their wonderful orange and red saris posing for photographers. I guessed it had to have something to do with the statue of the famous Indian poet and on chatting to a couple of them, they told me it was the anniversary of his death and they were planning on singing a few songs. statue

The police soon arrived as the crowds grew deeper hindering the traffic at the junction. What a wondrous sight to see so much colour and so many Indians cheering up the place with their smiles and songs. The women I spoke to told me there are around 1,000 members of the Indian Association of Shanghai. I wonder if they accept British members… probably not. Shame.
