That’s what my friend said when I sent him the photos of an empty Marks and Spencers. He was already packing his bags! What a dreadful shame and a massive disapointment for all Brits and many thousands of other ex-pats to whom M&S was an oasis. For many of us, it was the only place we could buy clothes which fit and of course, the food. Where are we going to get marmalade, porridge, tins of salmon, chocolate digestives? Yes there are alternatives but they are infintiely inferior to M&S.
When I was there a few days ago, all that was left was wine. Luckily I had taken the decision to stockpile orgnage squash a few weeks ago but I missed the opportunity to fill my shelves wen the sales started. I chose the wrong time to go to Vietnam for a holiday didn’t I. I can just imagine the bedlam of the first day of the 50% off sale. I can imagine not just the Chinese but even the foreigners pushing and shoving for those discounts. I would have been in there too, with sharpened elbows ready for the battle for the red onion chutney and curry sauces.
Oh God, I’m already missing them. How on earth am I and the rest of the British contingent going to survive without Marks and Spencers?
