I was expecting the heat when I returned to Shanghai from the UK but what I wasn’t expecting was the deluge which greeted me. The first ‘night’ I couldn’t wait any longer than 3pm to hit the sheets and woke up at what my phone told me was 7pm. The room, which I was expecting to be brightly lit by the summer evening sun, was pitch black and I had to get up and look out of the window to make sure I wasn’t dreaming. How could 7pm be so dark?
I was still suffering slightly from jet lag the next morning when I walked out onto Nanchang Lu in search of food so I had to stop and check my watch again to make sure I had set the correct time. It matched the time on my phone – 10:37am. I couldn’t believe it. It was so dark that cars had their headlights on. The sky was black and it was like I had stepped out 12 hours too early (or late).

In the summer, I find if you’re not wet from sweat, you’re wet from the rain – you cannot avoid getting wet one way or another. I’m not sure which I would prefer – neither really appeals, but I think I’d take the one which doesn’t turn day into night.
