I had hoped to get to a Premiership game but when I look at which games were going on at the weekend I found it was only international games. But my luck was in when i could see England was due to play Spain at Wembley. Wembley – the beating heart of English football. I got a few people together and we managed to get a family ticket for £84 for 4 people.
I spent the day in central London taking in the sites for the last time before going back to China and then headed for Wembley. I made the mistake of thinking Wembley Central was the right station for Wembley and almost missing my friends and the kick off.
As it was we walked into the stadium just as the whistle blew, but missing the awarding of the World Cup Golden Boot to Harry Kane which I wanted to see.
When I took my seat I could see why the tickets were so cheap, we were so high up that you couldn’t see the players or even the numbers on their backs. You could only make out the colour of their shirts.
As for the game itself, England scored first to cheers all round then Spain levelled and took the lead and then England gave up and we all went home before the final whistle. This was partly to avoid the crowds at the end but also because it was demoralising to see England perform so poorly.
However, no matter the result, I had filled an ambition – to watch a game at Wembley – and for the first ten minutes or so, when England was ahead it was quite fun!
