Winter Bunnies

Winter rabbits have appeared in Nanjing. You can pick one up for a couple of yuan on Zhong Shan Bei Lu. A man cycles round on his bicycle and stops periodically on the pavement and attracts mothers and children who poke their fingers through the bars of the tiny cage, the tight home of the small bunny. One of the mothers had bought her small child a rabbit who was carrying it with very little care, swinging it back and forward as they walked across the park.

There was more than a nip in the air when these poor little balls of fluff were carted around the city. I cannot imagine how cold it must be for the bunnies travelling on the back of the bike. Let’s hope a car doesn’t pull out recklessly in front of the bike or there will be a lot of squashed little fluffy balls on the road. Apparently they only last a couple of months – I don’t blame them, I’d want to end it all with a quality of life like this.

And at the temple you can pick up a goldfish squeezed into a novelty key ring or a miniature turtle piled high in a bucket. You wouldn’t want one from the bottom of the pile to be sure. Puppies and cats and birds are all sold in little cages so you can easily pick one up and take it home. Life is cheap in China!
