Arrival at Millfield

By | July 13, 2011

After my hospitalisation on Wednesday, Thursday saw me much strenghtened and en-route to Street in Somerset for the Millfield summer school. The taxi picked me up at Castle Cary train station and by the time I had arrived at the school I knew all about my driver.

A summary would be… he had been adopted when young by a couple who already had 5 children but did not now speak to his parents – “It’s a long story”, he said (thank God I was spared it!). He was half Irish and half Pakistani and had moved down to Somerset from London a few years ago. Then I got the whole of his career history before deicding to be a taxi driver.

On arrival at the school I bumped into my first colleague, “Billy” from Czech Rep, and being the only teaching staff there, we went to the pub. After a snack and a drink, and Billy continued on the cider.

Little was I to know that the next day was not only the first day of the induction course but the day my lovely brother would die.
