Sue and I have finished threading ribbon through a thousand bookmarks and I decided that the best way to get to people who are studying TOEFL is to put bookmarks into books. Where do you find books? In books shops of course.
So today I went up to Hunan Rd and to the Foreign Language Book Store.
On the 4th floor I had to hide in the aisle called “Study abroad” and dodged the security man as he wandered around looking bored. I picked up a book and pretended to read it as it shielded my other hand which was pushing bookmarks into lots of books.
The security man didn’t notice even though he ambled close to me several times. As I departed the store I slipped a small bundle unseen onto the counter so people could pick them up. I bet they’re wondering now how all these ribboned bookmarks got into all their books! Do they suspect the foreigner skulking around the IELTS and TOEFL section for 10 minutes?
Then I got the bus down to ZhongShan West Rd and into another smaller Foreign Language book store. Here it was a bit more difficult because the exam books were right next to the till which was manned by a eagle-eyed woman. So it was almost impossible to do it well. I stuck them between books rather than pulling each book out and threading it in like before. Then I left a few bookmarks scattered on top of the TOEFL and IELTS shelves for browsers to find and left quickly.
These shops are government owned shops and so I really didn’t want a confrontation. Let’s see if it does the trick. Let the students roll in!
I have everything ready now, for my big marketing push. The posters are in Nanjing Foreign Language School, Jinling High School and leaflets are ready to hand out. The DVDs have arrived and the bookmarks are ribboned.
