Thankfully Ed gave me the use of his class for a couple of lessons so that I could do some research for my master’s. He was not wrong when he said they were all at different levels. One of the girls was the same level as their Chinese teacher (in my spelling test) and one boy cannot even understand me when I ask him what his name is. And they are hoping to study in New Zealand!
My research concerns spelling strategies of Chinese students and I wanted to know whether, if I changed the way they learn spelling, they could spell unknown words better. So I taught them phonetics, the sounds that different vowel combinations make and I taught them about the magic ‘e’.
It was a bit like
teaching primary kids. I had set them some homework the week before. I
told them that they were to write a murder story and that it all had to
be in the past tense and had to use thee of the new words they had
