Huangpu is a working river

By | March 31, 2016

It’s easy to forget as you look at the gleaming buildings in Pudong and the grandeur of The Bund that the Huangpu river is more than just a thick line of grey sludge separating glass and steel from marble and stone. I love to watch the merchant ships make their laborious way back and for, some unladen, sitting high in the water and some weighed down with coal or other goods.

Shanghai has been an important trading port since the Qing Dynasty. Standing on the bank of the river, it’s easy to believe that Shanghai has now surpassed Hong Kong and Singapore as the busiest port in the world. China is, after all, the factory of the world and this is how it’s transported across the globe.
