For the last week or so, the whole of the French Concession has been sneezing. The air is thick with pollen and unless you stay at home, you cannot avoid goig out in it, breathing it in, filling your lungs with dirt and filling your blood stream with those nasty PM2.5 pollutants. Everywhere you can hear people sneezing. You don’t need to suffer from hay fever to find your eyes streaming. Being on your bike brings the added danger of pollen flying into your eyes and having to stop all the time to blink it out.
People are wearing face masks once more and covering their mouths with their sleeves.
The street cleaners are doing their best but as soon as they sweep the stuff up, more drops from the trees. We all long for the warmth to return after the long winter and this pollen season is the price we pay for wishing the spring to come.
