Loungewear is back in Nanjing

By | October 31, 2013

Winter is only just around the corner. Foreigners are still in single layers but the Chinese are wrapped up like they’re living in the Arctic. It’s only recently dipped below 70 degrees but already  people are in their loungewear – that’s what they call it on the packets I see in the supermarket.

They are a kind of padded pyjamas – not cool at all – not even nice designs (how could you possibly make them look nice!) but Nanjingers love them. They wear them to the supermarket, on buses, down the street – all over the city and in all contexts you can see people wearing these fashion disasters.

It is supposed to keep them from turning on the air-conditioners in their houses but I think I would rather sell a body part to pay for heating than be seen wearing these things.
