Quite possibly the most choclate-boxy village in Germany, Monreal is set in a small valley at the end of a winding road. We drove there from Bonn o the start of our two day road trip down the Rhine and Mosel rivers. Above the village are two castles, Lowenburg and Phillipsburg. We climbed the short distance to Lowenburg which afforded us the best view of the place.
Due to recent floods in the area the main bridge was closed for repair and this had kept tourist numbers to a manageable level. We walked around the village and then Tess was keen to have a look in the pottery where she had previously bought some nice pieces which she subsequently broken. She claims to be the clumsiest person she knows.
Neither of us bought anything – me because I don’t wasnt to accumualte stuff especially when I am travelling and Tess because she was saving her money for a later bulk wine purchase in the Mosel valley.
We spent some hard earned cash on a coffee and a toilet visit before hitting the road again. I would say that Monreal is the German equivalent of Boradway in the Cotswolds but harder to get to.
Over the next two days we would visit many other charming towns and villages in the Mosel Thein Eifel region.
