I wondered why there were so many armed police around the place last week. Nanjing South Railway station had them posted at the front entrance.
Then, in Hefei I saw the China Daily running a story about a robbery in Nanjing. The news report goes as follows. The suspect allegedly shot and killed a man who had just withdrawn 200,000 yuan (GBP 20,000) from a bank in Nanjing’s Dongmen Street and then fled the scene in a car. The provinces have offered a total sum of more than 3 million yuan (GBP 300k) for information leading to the killer’s arrest, after the Ministry of Public Security declared the case a national top priority.
One other description of him made me laugh. It said something like “When he is buying breakfast he points to what he wants instead of speaking”. So all he would have to do to avoid capture is to tie his hands by his side and speak – easy!
On the metro they are showing CCTV footage of him running from the scene and photos of him are everywhere. Nanjing still feels like a safe place and there’s no danger of me being robbed for GBP20k so don’t worry peeps.
