Platinum Jubilee in Dar

Just because we are not in the UK doesn’t mean we are not going to celebrate the queen’s long reign. The British Business Club put together a programme of events including a quiz, some Shakespeare and British films and of course the obligatory street party.

The street party was immediately after the very popular bajaj treasure hunt. I helped organise this event, thinking of clues and places to put them and sitting on the phone as the hundreds of messages came in a recording them on a spreadsheet.

There were over 20 teams racing around the peninsula with participants jumping out, running to locations, taking photos, or doing whatever had to be done there, and jumping back in the bajaj to the next place. I was sorry that I was organising it because it was a lot of fun and there was much laughter and screaming. The British High Commission had made tea and scones and other clues included Slipway, Seacliff, George & Dragon pub and an elusive phone box.

The street party followed. People had brought sausages and more sausage and cakes and more cakes and so by the end of the evening all I had eaten was rubbish food. Luckily the bar was open so at least I could was it all down with a beer. There was face painting and of course the awarding of prizes for the bajaj rally and a lot of catching up with people I had not seen in a long time.

As the volume of kids increased I was ready fora break. I came back home at 7pm and watched the celebrations on the BBC so that I felt like I was really in the middle of the action.

At least having the jubilee celebrations in the tropics we are pretty much guaranteed to have good weather. Thankfully it wasn’t too hot. We need more reasons to party and race around the peninsula in tuk tuks!
