Frank, Julia and I decided that after our big lunch we should get some exercise so we headed out of the back door and straight up onto Bamford Edge in the Peak District
(Bamford). The sun came out and we were soon shedding clothes. Walking along the edge we could see for miles along Hope Valley, the sun coming through the gaps in the clouds illuminating the village and making the heather and bracken glow in the later afternoon.
Climbers were srambling up the Edge but apart from that we were alone and there was no finer place to be on a Saturday afternoon. Frank was happy as Leicester City had beaten Coventry 1-0 and he had a new camera to play with. Poor Julia had to tolerate both me and Frank stopping all the time to take pictures.
After walking along the Edge for a long time we descended through a narrow track in the bracken. Julia led the way but with me following closely behind. Suddenly she came to a halt and we could both hear some squealing from the bracken.
Then a bundle of brown and whiteness came tumbling onto the path – two stoats locked together in a fight. They looked like a ball of fur rolling over each other down the path. We stood in amazement and I quickly dived into my pocket for the camera.
I managed to get a couple of snaps before they disappeared. What alovely thing to see when you’re out for a walk in the hills. I have never seen a stoat before and it was a real surprise and a treat. Sorry about the pictures – not my best!
