I went back to the hutongs today to deliver the photos I had printed for the family. They treated me like a returning hero and insisted on feeding me what I am sure was offal.
I tried (but very hard) to eat it and then said I was full. They said I couldn’t possibly be because I hadn’t eaten anything! I just smiled – I think they got the message.
Afterwards I went for a walk around the area of Fuxin Lu and eastwards. I quickly got lost amongst the old winding lanes and came across a VERY busy market. I haven’t seen such a market in Shanghai. There were hundreds of people there buying and selling everything from vegetables to tofu (very popular in China), fish (live of course), meat (incl chicken’s feet), fruit and live crabs.
There was also a hairdressers which I decided to risk – desperately needing a hair cut. Before they started I settled on a price of 1 pound. What you get for 1 pounds is shorter hair, and that’s about all. I didn’t mind, and it’s not too bad. I took a photo of my hairdresser but I have just accidently deleted off my camera all the photos I took today!
This video is what I took on my iPod – enjoy this very crowded market on Tangjiawen Lu, Shanghai.
