I was surprised, on my first Friday Afternoon Detention (FAD) duty to find so many of my students there. What on earth had they been doing? I looked down the list of misdemeanors to find most people had either not done their homework, spoken noisily in self study or missed a lesson. And what was the punishment for these crimes? For several hours on a Friday afternoon the naughty ones have to sit in room 208 under the watchful gaze of Mr Johnson with their arms on the table and their thumbs up.
For special offenders there’s all sort of torture – one is to sit and copy out a piece of French text in best handwriting and then there are all the unpleasant jobs which nobody likes doing. These include cleaning corridors, scrubbing classroom doors and other cleaning tasks.
So team, if you are reading this, please don’t let me down and waste your Friday afternoon in detention. It’s such a mind-numbing waste of your time. It’s not a badge of honour, it’s a shame.

Yes,l hope everyone in your class will no longer waste their nice Friday afternoon in detension.
