The trouble is when you live on Huai Hai Lu you have to walk past shops which do their best to lure you in. I have a problem with three shops on my route home; the Apple Store, the Sony shop and the Swatch shop. The Apple Store with its bright airy space full of beautiful strokable technology is the biggest danger en-route. There is nothing wrong with my iPhone4 so I am just waiting for another thief to pick my pocket before I have an excuse to upgrade.
The Sony shop with its beautiful headphones and its doors open so wide that it’s almost impossible not to fall into its gaping mouth. Then there’s the Swatch shop which is at the entrance to my compound. Imagine leaving your home each day and having to walk past a shop selling brightly coloured watches when yours has been missing for several weeks. I ask you – who could resist the temptation to enter.
So there I am – I’ve finished my stilton and rocket salad and I have saved some money by not having a drink and I am feeling pretty pleased with myself. The next thing I know I’m walking into the shop and out again ten minutes later with an expensive piece of plastic strapped to my wrist.
